Gardening tips for February 2012
The key with pruning is not to be too timid. Now is the time to ensure fast growth in the new season by cutting back summer flowering clematis. Bedding plants have a tendency to flower at different times depending on the temperature. Regularly pick off faded blooms and deadhead those that have finished. Give hybrid tea, floribunda and climbing roses a final prune. Cut to an otward pointing bud for maximum growth and to reduce the prospect of disease by allowing air to freely circulate. February is also ideal for moving shrubs that may have outgrown their position and for dividing perennials.
- Feed shrubs with a slow release fertilizer such as bonemeal
- Plant container grown shrubs and trees to give them plenty of time to bed in and become established.
- Do not plant anything that is tender due to changable weather
- Heavy rain and storms can be prevalent this month and can play havoc in the garden especially with climbing plants.
- Do not mow if the grass is too wet
- Set lawn mower blades at their highest level
In bloom this month:
Daphne Mezereum (Mezereon), Winter Flowering Pansies (Viola x wittrockiana), Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), Lonicera (Winter Flowering Honeysuckle)
